Turn Off The Lights

Teaching Artist: Paul Vandivort

With shadow puppets, a completely different type of performance is available. Shadow Puppets resemble silhouettes more than traditional puppets and can move in very life-like and dramatic ways. When the house lights go down and the stage light casts the first shadow, a common reaction from children is “It’s a TV! That is so cool!”

Children will learn the basics of shadow puppet construction and performance, and will learn about different kinds of puppets. This program is available as either a single day workshop, or as a longer residency. In the single day workshop children will learn about different kids of puppets, and be able to make one shadow puppet. In the longer residency students will explore the difference between making four and two legged animals, make self portraits of themselves, and explore the ways they can make their own designs come alive.
