Dance as Joy

Teaching Artist: Aparna Kalyanaraman

In this program, we center the Self and community as we explore dance styles from around the world. Here choreography is a tool for expression and learning, and joy is always the measure!

The teaching artist will guide students in a warm up incorporating movement from various movement practices. Core strengthening, balance and mental focus along with intentional breathing practice. Personal application will be emphasized–what works best for the learner? Warm up and conditioning activities will encourage students to cultivate habits they can carry with them outside of the residency or classroom.

Music will enhance the warm up and guide the free dance, and will allow for cultural connections–both worldwide and local. Most of the “choreography” will be embedded in warm up routines, depending on length of residency a simple dance with room for personal flavor will also be taught!
